2005-2-8---Lihue:
Back on the east side we often like to go over to a lookout of
Nawiliwili Harbor in Lihue. We like to watch the boats come and go and
have even seen a few whales from there. One time a mother and her calf
were actually coming into the harbor. Someone from a conservation
organization showed up at the lookout and we had a really interesting
chat with them about the whales around Kauai. They were getting ready to
launch a boat to herd the mother and calve out of the harbor, but the
whales turned around and headed out before that was necessary.
The 86-foot tall wood and concrete Ninini Point lighthouse overlooks Nawiliwili Bay, right by the LIH airport. Built in 1906, the lighthouse was automated in 1953.
Nawiliwili Harbor is located about 1.5 miles southeast of the small city of Lihue, along Kauai's southeast coast, and has been the main harbor on the island since 1930.Back to ninini point lighthouse
Ninini Point, which marks the northern entrance to Nawiliwili Bay, was leased by the Hawaiian government from the Lihue Plantation in 1897 as a site for a lighthouse, and several light structures have served on the point over the years. The first was a forty-foot, wooden, frame tower surmounted by a lamp room that housed a light and reflector at an elevation of seventy feet above the sea. The present seventy-two-foot concrete tower was constructed in 1932 along with a new three-bedroom keeper’s dwelling set on concrete block footings. we enjoy watching the boats sail in and out of the harbor from Ninini Point.
Looking up the coast from the lighthouse
some of the wildflowers growing near the lighthouse
even wild cactus
I didn't know some cactus are climbers.
Making us feel more at home---our rental car is like our new car at home.
Also near Nawiliwili is the Marriott hotel on Kalapaki Beach.
Nice beach area along Kalapaki bay
beautiful walkway
tree trimmers and coconut removers.
We walked along the beach and marveled at the Marriott pool.
cute little green bird on a flowering tree
chickens and chicks everywhere
views from the Marriott grounds.
Love the landscaping!
Love palm trees!!!!
Love all the different birds---like these cattle egrets.
We seldom hang out at Kalapaki bay. Rather hard to get a parking spot and there's more walking then Ken likes to do, but it's a beautiful bay.
