2007 Kauai

2007--our 6th trip to Kauai, alone again, naturally: Tandem surfing; Moir Gardens; Secret Beach; Mahaulepu Beach

 

 

On odd years we have the 1 bedroom condos at Pahio Kauai Beach Villas, so we had no family join us this time. We had to just enjoy Kauai by ourselves---which wasn't too hard to do!

It was another fantastic Kauai vacation.  A lot of new things this year: the clean up of Lydgate, the tandem surfers, the Kee sunset like none others I've experienced, and even Ken finally using a snorkel mask!  Can't wait to go back!!!

2007 March 11---Anini and time to go home:

Since our flight is a redeye, we had all day to vacation still.  So---we conditions seemed best to go to Anini again.  Sort of has become our last day go to place.

 Use to not find many fish here, but the more we go back, the more we find.

 This is about halfway out to the outer reef and it's quite shallow. 

 After snorkeling for the day, we headed back to KBV for an hour.  They offer a complimentary hour for owners who have late flights.  It's much appreciated!  We're able to shower, change, dry our stuff, and watch a bit of tv before heading out.  Great way to calm down before the long flight. 

2007 March 10---Anini and Nawiliwili:

 We were able to get to Anini today.  When surf is up everywhere else, this is often still fairly calm due to the vast reef here.

 When we left Anini, we went to Lihue to the lighthouse by the airport.  We've often seen whales from here and today was no exception.

 It was still pretty cloudy around the island, so we didn't go North or South for sunset.  But the views by Nawiliwili weren't bad.

 It's sort of feaky watching airplanes flying low over head on their decent for landing.

 It's an interesting ride to the airport lighthouse through a golf course.  This must be one of the hazards.

 There are even peacocks running around the golf course.

 Thus ended our last full day here.  Sadness is setting in.

2007 March 9---rain, rain, go away:

Today was a rainy day in Kauai.  Not all that unusual this time of year.  We decided to chill out pretty much today and just stay around the East side.  Even a cloudy rainy day on Kauai can still be a pretty day!

 Even had a few Nenes just hanging out at KBV.

 I did take a walk around the resort between the rain drops.  This is looking towards the hotel on the other side of the lagoon from Kauai Beach Villas.  The hotel and the villas make up Kauai Beach Resort.

beginning of sunset.  Even though it's the East coast, there are often really great sunsets here where the East clouds are brilliantly colored.

It's also close to the airport.  Very convenient for arriving and departing days.

just after sunset, we headed to Wailua Marina for dinner.  This is also where the boats that go to Fern grotto leave from.  We did that once, but the ferns were knocked down by the weather.  Wonder what they look like now?

The Wailua Marina Restaurant.  We use to really like this place.  But it's gone down hill.  (The restaurant did close permanently.  I don't remember exactly when, but as of 2017 it's still closed)

 Not the type of day you normally think of when you think of Hawaii vacations.  But it still beats the cold and snow of St. Louis in Feb.! 

2007 March 9---a rainy day in Kauai:

Today was a rainy day all over the island.  So we pretty much hunkered down and stuck around the Kauai Beach Resort area.

 we're also pretty close to the airport here.  Convenient for travel days!

 although this is facing East, we still get some pretty nice sunset skies here as the clouds to the East also change colors.

 We did venture out about just after sunset.  Went to Wailua marina for dinner.  Parked by the restaurant are these boats that take people up to the Fern Grotto.  We went there once and I rather enjoyed it, but the ferns were pretty well depleted from recent storms.  Wonder if they've grown back?

 And the restaurant we went to---Wailua Marina restaurant.  We use to really like this place.  But it seems to have gone down hill.  Service wasn't that great anymore.  There weren't even many people there!  (By 2017 it had closed permanently.  Too bad they couldn't get it back to what it was.  It's in a really neat location).

 NOt the typical Kauai vacation day that one would think of.  I'd rather it not rain all day.  But it still beats the cold and snow back home.
