2007 March 8--lydgate cleanup, secret beach, hanalei sunset:

The daily Lydgate check---at least the tractor is in a different position.
Walking around by the upper parking lot of Lydgate park.
looking towards the bridge over the Wailua River
with a bunch of debris that was brought down the river during the storms.
 a treasure on the debris
one of the interesting trees in the park.  I think they call it a walking tree.
The Heiau by the upper parking lot of Lydgate.
Apparently a lot of floats wash up on the island and the owner of this lot uses what he finds as yard art.
We've never been to Secret Beach but read that there are pools here good for snorkeling in.
After a treacherous trip down from the dirt unofficial parking area (also known for breakins), we made it to Secret Beach.  I say treacherous because it was a downhill walk to the beach and the trail was covered with tiny pine cone like things.  They acted more like ball bearings!  If it hadn't been for a wire fence along the trail that we held on to for dear life, we would have made it down there a lot quicker.
But the views of Secret Beach were worth it!
But I didn't see anywhere that would be suitable for snorkeling!
 The surf was pretty rough

But it was mesmerizing watching the crashing waves.
There were a few surfers here.

The waves made nice long curls.

but it came in pretty rough to the beach.

a view in perspective to where the light house is.
some of the lava rock by the beach.

I think the tidal pools for snorkeling are suppose to be somewhere this way, but after seeing the surf, we elected not to follow up.
Can't get enough of this view!
heading back up the trail.  At least going up wasn't as slick as coming down.
Bet this is a never ending job on Kauai---tree trimming.
We ended up back at Hanalei Bay for sunset.
for another lack luster sunset there.
In all our trips to Kauai (15 as of 2017), this is the only time we've made it to Secret Beach.  Would love to go back there and hang out just to watch the waves, but hubby hasn't wanted to risk the walk in again.  Although I have read other reviews of the beach and noone else seems to have had the same problem with the ball bearing pine cone things.  Definitely a day I'll not forget.
