2011-Feb. 19: KBV Oceanview, Poipu, Lawai

We were suppose to be able to check into our new unit by 2, so we didn't venture far. Did go to Olympic cafe for another great breakfast. Then waited in our room until they called and told us we could transfer to our new room. They would have moved our stuff for us, but we decided to save them the trouble.  The views from our 3rd floor unit in building G were outstanding!

I never tire of this view!!!
Weather was still good, so we headed south for a change, even though north was still good. We were beginning to miss the south side. With it getting late by the time we got there, we just went to one beach---Poipu. Again we shared it with a monk seal.

Always love seeing these guys---Moorish Idols
 4 spot butterfly fish
We did still get a couple hours of snorkeling in. Saw lots of interesting oceanlife, such as this juvenile orange stripe surgeon fish.
These are adult orange stripe surgeon fish.

Poipu does seem to have the most of these scary fish---needle fish. They like to hang around just under the surface. If you don't look up, it's easy to miss them.

This is the "tombula" between the really shallow area to the right where the life guard chair is and the more open area to the left. When we first started going to Kauai over 10 years ago, the tombula was there. Then it disappeared for several years. Last year it was back. I'm not sure if more sand was brought in or if it's natural, but it's nice having it back. There use to be quite a current running through where the tombula is. Most people only snorkel in the water on the left side of this picture thinking the right has poor snorkeling.  I've actually seen more species and schools of fish on the right side. It's also better for taking pictures since the shallower water makes it easier to get closer to the fish.

After snorkeling and while waiting for sunset, I took a walk down the beach.  Saw this guy flying by on my way.

Looking back towards Poipu from down the beach.
We did get a bit of a sunset, although the clouds really did tone it down. I toned it back up with Photoshop.

After sunset, we headed back to the east side, stopping at Kalapaki Joes for dinner---fish and chips for me and rueben for Ken. Dinner was good.
