on our way back to the East side we stopped at Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge
great views of the ocean from here.
Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1985 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is marked by its towering lighthouse.
The ocean cliffs and tall grassy slopes of a dormant volcano provide a protective breeding ground for many Hawaiian seabirds.
The light house is a 52 foot structure situated on a rocky peninsula 180 feet above the Pacific Ocean. Built in the historic era of lighthouses in the U.S., it was commissioned as the Kīlauea Point Light Station on May 1, 1913.
The view off the rugged northern coastline and the deep-blue Pacific makes this the perfect vantage point for photos.
Signage throughout the refuge identifies the area's bird species, including frigates, shearwaters, boobies and Laysan albatrosses nesting on the property.

A view of the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge from the overlook just before the property line.
This is also a good place to watch for whales during the winter months.
A beautiful day to check out the North side.
