3-8-2003

Today we headed to Lydgate for a little snorkeling.
Love this man-made pond on the East side.  So convenient to our resort!
Beautiful grounds and beach, too.  Lots of space to spread out and enjoy the views.
Plus Dad hadn't been snorkeling before, so we figured this was a good place to start.
 Dad and Ken heading in
 I don't think that's how it's done, Dad!
a little bit of wave action, but not bad.
Ready to go!  Although I tried that mask and don't know how anyone can snorkel in it for very long!  He rented it from Boss Frog or Snorkel Bob's
Back in the day when Ken refused to even use a snorkel mask or fins!
 And they're off.
The initial chill is a bit stunning.
Best way to get past that is to just dive in!
 The both finally did.
it's really not too bad once you're finally in!
Some of the fishies in Lydgate.  There's really quite a few fish in there.  Most people say it's for beginners, but I enjoy looking for something unusual in there.  And usually I find it.
 female yellow tail coris.
 saddle goatfish
and Stripeys!  Only place I've ever seen them but in the Waikiki Aquarium.  Wonder how long they're remain here!?
Looks like Dad is managing pretty well.
Later in the afternoon, we cleaned up and headed South again.  First to Spouting Horn.
 It was spouting pretty good.

looking up the coast towards the west.
Love these yellow flowering trees all over Kauai.  So nice seeing flowers and greenery this time of year!  Been deprived of that for a couple months back in St. Louis.
When it was dinner time, we headed to our favorite pizza place on Kauai---Brick Oven Pizza.  Expensive!  But we both like their style of pizza a lot (which is unusual for us).
After dinner we drove around awhile killing time 'til sunset.  Came across these painted coconuts.  Love the idea of being able to mail them just as they are!
 Also love this flower planter!
As it got later, we headed to Salt Pond.  There's a pond there that turns red when it's rained a lot.  Love the red soil of Kauai.
It was still early, so we continued to Polihale.  Not the best of roads!

 But the beach is gorgeous!

 as are the Napali Mountains.
Dad heading down to the water's edge.
 such a huge beautiful beach!

Not many people come here.  Many people won't drive the 5 miles of pitted dirt road to get here.

 Ken joining Dad.
People with 4 wheel drive often drive on this beach.  There's a camp ground here, too.  Maybe I'd be more interested in camping in a place like this!
Proof we were there---at least proof they were there.
One last look towards the mountains as we were driving out.
Drove around a little more.  Found this church ruins.
Love the decorative wall in the front of this church!
 Another cute church
I believe the ruins was the old Saint Raphael.
Someone's house.  May not be the prettiest, but it's on Kauai!  How bad can it be!?
On to Salt Pond to show off the sunset there to Dad.
 Looking towards the restrooms.
Looking way across the big bay here.
Not the area we normally snorkel.   Wonder if they saw anything here?
 Almost time for sunset.
 Love all the trees here!
They make for a great foreground for sunset!

 So many different perspectives!
a couple sunset cruises off in the distance.
 and it's down.
Pretty much a perfect day!  Wish it would last forever!
